Adding Websites and Servers (Assets)

How to add new assets in Warden, through the Auto Discovery or manually.

Assets can be added to Warden in three ways: using Auto discovery (the easiest and quickest way), adding them manually, or through a bulk import.

Adding assets using Auto discovery

From the top menu, navigate to the Auto discovery section, click on the + icon in the top left corner to "Add a new range":

In the "Add new range" menu that appears, a new range can be easily configured using the following parameters:

  • Team - By default this is the team context you are in. It can be selected using the Team selector in the Top menu.
  • Range - Use this field to configure your range using standard CIDR notation. You can either use pre-defined ranges or add a custom range.
  • Edge Service - Specify whether your assets are to be reached through an installed Edge Service or through the Internet (see Reaching firewalled & internal assets).
  • Auto Discovery Schedule - Use this field to let Warden autonomously schedule auto discoveries without further action.
  • Discovered assets scan frequency - Use this field to autonomously schedule scans on newly discovered assets without further action.

Clicking on the 'Show more options' link will allow you to specify these additional parameters:

  • Exclusions - If you need to exclude certain addresses from being discovered, you can provide a list of IPs or ranges (one per line).
  • Tags - Select the tags that will be associated with all the newly discovered assets.
  • Contact Information - Provide the contact information that will be associated with all the newly discovered assets.
  • Description - Provide description information that will be associated with all the newly discovered assets.

Once you have entered the information in the menu, click "Add and discover now" to start the Auto discovery immediately or choose the "Add" button to start it at a later time.

When Auto discovery is running, you will see newly discovered assets being displayed on the Auto discovery screen:

Scheduling Auto discovery

To ensure a continuous network security of all your connected devices and web apps it is best to schedule your Auto discovery to run on a regular interval and automatically feed newly discovered assets to the scan schedule.

You can edit range by clicking on one from the ranges columns. From the sidenav, you can access the edit and schedule button.

Once your Auto discovery schedule is set, an icon will appear at the right the side of the range:

Manually adding assets

You can add assets manually in Warden, by going to the Websites or Servers section, and clicking the + button at the top right corner of the page. A dialog will appear allowing you to configure the new asset using the following parameters (slightly different menu for Websites and Servers):

Add a new website menu

  • Team - By default this is the team context you are in. You can switch teams using the Team selector in the Top menu.
  • URL - The URL where the website is located. The domain should be resolvable through the appropriate Edge Service (see Reaching firewalled & internal assets).
  • Starting URL - (optional) Specify the sub-path within the website where the crawling should begin.
  • Edge Service - Specify whether your assets should be reached through an installed Edge Service or through the Internet (see Reaching firewalled & internal assets).
  • Tags - Select the tags to be associated with this new asset.
  • Contact Information - Provide the contact information to be associated with this new asset.
  • Description - Provide the description information that will be associated with this new asset.

Add a new server menu

  • Team - By default this is the team context you are in. You can switch teams using the Team selector in the Top menu.
  • IP Address or Hostname - The IP or Hostname of the server. The hostname should be resolvable through the appropriate Edge Service (see Reaching firewalled & internal assets).

Once you have entered the information in the menu, click on the "Add" button to begin validating the newly created asset.

During the verification process, the asset will show a "Validate" icon in the "status" column on the right.

Failure to validate is generally caused by three main problems:

  • The website is not responding.
  • The hostname cannot be resolved.
  • The Edge Service through which the asset is to be reached is not connected.

Click the icon to request a re-validation of the asset.

Bulk asset import

Details of the results following the bulk import will then be accessible in the "Activity Log".

Add asset using bulk import & auto-discovery going to the Websites or Servers section, and clicking "Import from CSV" button at the top right corner of the page.

In the given menu, drag and drop a CSV file containing a list of assets (IPs, hostnames or websites) to be imported in bulk. The CSV file should be UTF-8 encoded and RFC-4180 formatted in a single column (additional columns will be ignored) containing a list of IPs, Hostnames or Websites, each on their own line. Once the CSV file is selected, the dotted square will turn green indicating that the CSV file is ready to be imported.

Once the CSV file is ready to be imported, click the "Import" button to start the import process.

A message in the bottom left corner will indicate that the import process has started.

Assets will soon begin appearing in the respective Websites and/or Servers section.

Once the import process is complete, a message in the bottom left corner will indicate "Import Completed."
